Why we make music

Today we're starting our review of Laura Gagné's Vivre de ta musique course.

We did the whole thing last summer, but we feel like we've forgotten a lot of the tips, and we feel the need to revise the tools, go oil them, reclassify them, etc., to continue our progress towards Vivre de notre Musique - Living off our music. The first section contains a very powerful exercise, the Why.

You have to answer why to the first question, and then 7 more times, the why of your previous answer.

Here are our answers:

Hélène Nicole

  1. Why do you make music? Because I feel it's the ultimate talent given to me at birth.
  2. Why do you do it? Because as a child, I spent hours listening to and singing music, and the parents I chose, despite their problems, surrounded me with music.
  3. Why was this? Because it took us away from the pain, and I didn't feel like I was working, but alive.
  4. And why? Because even though it was hard to learn the songs, even though I didn't speak much English yet, I was still aware of the challenge, and I need challenges.
  5. Why do you want to do this? Because I need to surpass myself. I never feel good when I'm standing still.
  6. Why do you ask? Because I need, I have a force inside me that wants to grow, to channel itself.
  7. Why do you think this is? I think that God ie: the Creator Power of the universe goes through me to heal others, to bring them back home, which is the inner peace, choice, freedom and love within us,
  8. Why? Because for me, music brings me home, to reason, and I have to show the way to others, because I'm a leader.

David:

  1. Why do I make music? It stimulates many levels of my being.
  2. Why? 1. Intellectually, all the cultural levels of a) language and origin, b) in terms of its rhythm and style c) the context of performance, church or other venues. 2. Emotionally, feeling engaged in an action of: a) vocal and guitar skills, b)listening, not just 'hearing' c) memory and spontaneity 3. Spiritually: engaging in the 'ritual' of performing music as if a prayer or meditation.
  3. Why? Connection with others in a meaningful and liberating way.
  4. Why? Connecting because of our communality of being engaged in the human experience.
  5. Why? We are born, struggle, fail, succeed, love, feel lost, feel connected, feel lonely, tired, angry, hungry, jealous, resentful... on a path toward peace.
  6. Why? Perhaps we are all on a relative spectrum in terms of 'how connected we are to the physical plane as compared to the realm of the spirit'.
  7. Why? Music is a performance art that connects the daily physicality to the eternal universal spirit.
  8. Why? Because music only exist in the present moment, requiring both the physical and eternal present, writing the razor's edge of time/no time.
